Call Center Agents, Possible to Have a Dry Eye Syndrome

The advancement of technology may have made almost everything easier for everybody but along with it came many hazardous situations. This is true for people who are always in front of their computer. Addiction to gadgets has not only replaced having real bonding with the family but had also resulted in eye diseases and other health conditions. Unfortunately for call center agents, dry eye syndrome has become a common problem for them. This is because while they are working in front of their computer, they wouldn’t be blanking as often as they should.

Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome 

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Trouble driving at night
  • Burning, itchy, and stinging sensation in the eyes
  • Redness of eyes
  • Gristly mucus in the eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Sensation that there’s something in the eyes
  • Difficulty in weareing contact lenses

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome 

  • Spending too much time in front of the computer, smartphones, and tablets
  • Aging
  • Damage of the tear glands due to radiation or inflammation
  • Diabetes
  • Lupus
  • Shogren’s syndrome
  • Vitamin A Deficiency
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Scleroderma
  • Thyroid disorders


  • Always keep the computer screen below eye level. If it’s positioned above eye level, the tendency is to open the eyes wide. Positioning it below eye level slows down the tears’ evaporation in between eye blinking.
  • Avoid direct contact of air into the eyes. Don’t direct fans, air conditioners, and hair dryers towards the eyes.
  • If the work requires being in front of the computer for long hours, always take eye breaks. Close the eyes for a few seconds every now and then or blink repeatedly for several seconds.
  • Wear protective eyewear. Always wear sunglasses to block dry air and wind. Ask for sunglasses with shields.
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking worsens the condition of dry eyes syndrome.
